Good morning. I thank all of you for being here today good morning, today we are examining our nations history of Voter Suppression. As well as the obstacles that many minority communities continue to face to this day. And in exercising their fundamental right to vote. Tomorrow we will be holding a ceremony to honor our dear friend and colleague and our former chairman, Elijah Cummings. We will be remaining in disappearing room after him and commending everything he stood for. Todays hearing is also part of our effort to honor his legacy. Protecting the right to vote was one of the most important issues. If not the most important issue he fought for during his decades in Public Service. We are holding this hearing in february during black historymonth. It was black americans whose voices were stifled, blocked in silence for centuries and is black americans who are still being disproportionately targeted, even now in shameful efforts to prevent them from registering to vote , purging th
state, and gave us the first tangible look at where republican voters stand right now. and tonight, iowa republicans delivered a resounding victory to donald trump, nothing hugely surprising there. but we re gonna still talk about what that means. with me here at the table, all-star panel, former obama campaign manager, msnbc political analyst, and as i always like to say, my old boss, david plouffe. and the host of the weekend on msnbc, michael steele, simone sanders townsend, and alicia menendez. everybody is working very hard over the last couple of days. nbc news can project that donald trump will exceed 50% tonight. we can also project that florida governor desantis will finish second, which is a bit surprising coming into tonight. we will bring you any updated numbers as soon as we get them, and we will stay closer to the decision desk, and of course, the one and only, steve kornacki. the field has also one candidate smaller tonight, vivek ramaswamy announced he was dro

new york city in court for the first day of the damages trials in e. jean carroll s case against him. this morning all eyes are on new hampshire now after iowa casts the first ballots in the race for the 2024 republican presidential nomination. former president donald trump cruised to victory in the iowa caucuses winning by nearly 30%. and you can see ron desantis came in a distance second, narrowly edging out former u.n. ambassador, nikki haley. and then vivek ramaswamy came in fourth and dropped out of the race. and asa hutchison just announced he was dropping out of the race. 100,000 iowans turned out, much lower than in 2016. so it s now off to new hampshire. great place. we won it last time, and we won it both times, and we love it. the people are great. we thank you for your effort and we thank you for your support. you helped us get a ticket punched out at the hawkeye state. our campaign is the last hope of stopping the biden/trump nightmare. and stev
it s one a. m. here in new york, midnight in iowa, and a very first test of the 2024 republican primary season is now complete. joining me now at the top of this hour, former obama campaign manager, msnbc political analyst, and my former boss david plouffe, former rnc chairman and co-host of the weekend, michael steele, former communications director for jeb bush 2016 campaign, and now writer at large for the bulwark tim miller, and former communications director for president obama jennifer palmieri. now, tonight in iowa, nbc news projected that donald trump won the caucuses with more than 50% of the vote. his numbers really cement the four-time indicted candidate status as the front-runner. we already knew this. but in the republican field, the race for second place, it had a bit more drama with nikki haley and florida governor ron desantis locked in a dead heat for most of the night. but as awkward as he may be at times, and he is awkward, desantis did put in the w
