Amarjit Singh Sidhu, aka Jeeti Sidhu, brother of Punjab Cabinet Minister and local MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, was elected the Mayor at the first General House meeting of the Mohali Municipal Corporation held at MC Bhawan here today.
Amarjit Sidhu (48) will hold the post for two and a half years. Punjab Cabinet Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was present at the meeting as an observer.
Amrik Singh Somal and Kuljit Singh Bedi were elected the Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, respectively. Somal, a two-time councillor, had defeated former Mayor Kulwant Singh in the elections held on February 14.

CHANDIGARH: The ruling Congress in Punjab won the Mohali municipal corporation polls on Thursday by registering victory in 37 of the 50 wards.
After the final counting of votes, the Congress won 37 wards, while independents bagged the remaining 13, officials said.
With this, the ruling party registered victory in seven municipal corporations and emerged as the leading party in the Moga municipal corporation, where no party got a clear majority.

The counting of votes for the Mohali Municipal Corporation would be held tomorrow as re-polling was held in two wards today.
The election results declared today put the Congress way ahead of other parties. With victory in 1,484 of the 2,165 wards of various municipal bodies, the Congress got clear majority in six of the seven corporations, including Bathinda (Akali bastion) and Gurdaspur/Pathankot area (BJP stronghold). It emerged as the single largest party in the Moga MC by winning 20 of the 50 seats. The party is likely to get support from 10 Independent winners.
As expected, the ruling Congress has swept the civic polls in Punjab which were held in the backdrop of prolonged farmers’ protests being supported by the party.
