CHANDIGARH â Seeing it as a referendum against the centerâs new farm laws, the ruling Congress, led by Amarinder Singh, a strong advocate for nullifying the âdraconianâ farm laws, on Feb. 17 emerged as the largest party in the Punjab civic polls, winning six of the seven municipal corporations, leaving the Akalis, AAP and BJP far behind.
The results have come as a shot in the arm for the chief minister, with party chief Sunil Jakhar not losing the opportunity to launch the âCapt for 2022â campaign to ensure the partyâs return to power in the Assembly polls slated for early next year, under the leadership of Amarinder Singh.
As expected, the ruling Congress has swept the civic polls in Punjab which were held in the backdrop of prolonged farmers’ protests being supported by the party.
The Congress party today won seven municipal corporations in Punjab local body polls, bagging all the bodies at Moga, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Abohar, Pathankot, Batala, and Bathinda. The counting at 2,302 wards of seven municipal corporations and 109 municipal council-nagar panchayats started on Wednesday morning.
