The Monroe County Tourist Development Council has launched an extensive public awareness campaign to educate locals and visitors on the two-day lobster mini-season, set for Wednesday and Thursday, July 28-29.
The TDC created a dedicated website, http://www.keyslobsterseason.com, that includes interactive videos with need-to-know dive and boating safety tips, up-to-date rules, regulations for lobster hunting within the Keys, such as daily limits and correct harvesting techniques.
The website also stresses avoiding prohibited no-take zones protected within Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary boundaries.
The TDC also created a brochure given to hotels and guesthouse owners to email to their guests before they arrive in the Keys. Each local chamber of commerce was given 1,000 brochures to hand out to visitors, said Andy Newman, a spokesman for the TDC.

A proposed road-widening project and elevated express lane that would bypass a key portion of Florida Cityâs commercial corridor and connect the Florida Turnpike to U.S. 1 just before the 18-Mile Stretch is garnering opposition from business leaders both on the mainland and in the island chain.
The Florida Department of Transportation began a study in 2017 to evaluate the future traffic needs of the region and determined a need to widen a 3-mile portion of U.S. 1 in the next few years based on traffic projections for 2045.
The project would begin on U.S. 1 at its intersection with S.W. 344th St. and end on the Turnpike near N.W. 8th St. But Brian Conesa, of the Tropical Everglades Visitor Association in Florida City, said âall businesses here are in oppositionâ to the project.
Approximately 50 bicyclists will depart Miami at 5 a.m. Saturday, April 17, and finish at the Islander Resort in Islamorada.
Organizers expect the bicyclists will be spread out by the time they reach the 18-Mile Stretch and the Keys.
They are not expected to cause traffic congestion. Planners also expect the bicyclists to be in the Keys between noon and 4 p.m. For information go to www.biketothebeach.org/florida/
