Vaccine milestone passed in Stevenage, North Herts and Beds

Published: 5:00 PM June 3, 2021    More than 300,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered across Stevenage, North Herts and Central Beds, 200,000 of which - Credit: PA Across Stevenage, North Herts and Central Beds, more than 500,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered, according to the latest government data. Since the vaccine roll out began in December 2020, 506,870 jabs have been given to adults - those aged 18 or over - up to June 1. Of these, 306,246 were first doses. A further 200,624 were administered as seconds, meaning almost a quarter of a million of the population across the three authorities are fully vaccinated. In Stevenage, 50,927 first doses have been given out, as well as a further 32,698 second jabs.

Indian variant COVID rates in Stevenage and North Herts

Around 30 per cent of Central Beds COVID cases are the B.1.617.2 strain. This comes as no surprise as neighbouring Bedford - which has hit the national headlines in recent days due to its dizzying statistics  - recorded 81.1 per cent of its cases as the Indian variant. Bordering authority East Herts also has a notably higher rate of the variant, with 42.9 per cent for the week up to May 8.  The data comes from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in London - which is conducting COVID-19 genome (variant) surveillance. The remaining 25 per cent of coronavirus cases in Stevenage are the strain B.1.1.7, also known as the UK or Kent variant. North Herts and Central Beds cases of COVID-19 are predominantly this strain, recording 77.8 per cent and 69.4 per cent respectively.
