Live: Boris Johnson addresses nation on Christmas and Covid crisis - updates
Coronavirus cases have been soaring in some parts of England as European countries restrict UK travel (Image: Getty Images)
Boris Johnson is set to address the nation this afternoon (Monday) in an urgent update on the coronavirus crisis.
The Prime Minister will lead the press conference following emergency talks with ministers around France banning lorries carrying freight from the UK.
Other key transport links have also been cut as nations across Europe - and the world - refuse to allow entry to anyone from the UK.
The decision came after England alerted the world to the emergence of a new, more virulent strain of Covid.
Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring) The move comes amid reports that the Prime Minister could order new travel restrictions for South East England in an attempt to stop it spreading to the rest of the country. The chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty said the UK had now informed the World Health Organisation that it had concluded the mutant strain could spread more quickly. “As announced on Monday, the UK has identified a new variant of Covid-19 through Public Health England’s genomic surveillance,” he said in a statement. “As a result of the rapid spread of the new variant, preliminary modelling data and rapidly rising incidence rates in the South East, the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) now consider that the new strain can spread more quickly.

The new Tier 4 rules for London and the South East mean people must stay at home. You are only able to meet with one other person from another household in a public, outdoor space. People can go outdoors for unlimited exercise.
What about Christmas? Boris Johnson has now cancelled Christmas plans in Tier 4 areas like South Essex which means the five-day Christmas bubble for three households is now not allowed. People in Tier 4 should not mix with anyone outside their own household on Christmas Day, except support and childcare bubbles. In Tier 1, 2 and 3 areas – like Colchester and Tendring, the Christmas bubble period has now been reduced to just Christmas Day.
