Sellers to return as United Way of Central Iowa president BY MICHAEL CRUMB, Senior Staff Writer Friday, April 30, 2021 2:24 PM A familiar face has been named the new president of the United Way of Central Iowa. Mary Sellers has been named to the post, succeeding Elisabeth Buck when she retires in July, the United Way of Central Iowa’s board of directors announced today. Sellers previously led the organization from 2012 to 2017, when she was named U.S. president with the United Way Worldwide in Arlington, Va. Buck’s last day is scheduled for July 9. Sellers is scheduled to start July 1, allowing for the two to work together to create a smooth transition, United Way officials said.

Iowans gather in downtown Des Moines to celebrate Chauvin verdict

Des Moines Register While thousands of people celebrated the guilty verdicts in the trial of Derek Chauvin in the streets of Minneapolis, cities across the country followed suit with their own celebrations, including here in Des Moines. The white former Minneapolis police officer was found guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who was held to the ground with the officer s knee last Memorial Day for over nine minutes after police responded to a report that Floyd used a counterfeit $20 bill. Several dozen central Iowans gathered for a community event called Justice for George Floyd Tuesday evening at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines. Together with pizza, music, smiles, and love, the group planned to reflect and respond to the historic trial.
