Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe’s official visit to Sri Lanka on 27 April 2021 has sparked a conversation on strengthening defence ties between the two countries. This paper sheds light on the gradual growth in military relations and explains the significance of adding this new dimension to the existing solid bilateral relationship.

General Wei Fenghe, Defence Minister and a member of the 19th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, officially visited to Sri Lanka between 27 and 29 April 2021, with a delegation of 37 high-ranking officials. General Wei is also a member of the Central Military Committee and State Councilor. He is the second senior official to visit Sri Lanka in less than a year. While there is a widely accepted international law of the sea, reflected in the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the great powers of the world are divided over competing and, in some cases, incompatible, domestic maritime laws or interpretations of UNCLOS. The areas of disagreement extend to fundamental principles, such as which waters lie under a nation state’s jurisdiction and what it is entitled to do, and forbid, in those waters.
Compounding the problem, some of the sharpest divisions have emerged between the world’s two increasingly antagonistic superpowers, China and the United States. COLOMBO (News 1st); Ambassadors of the European Union called on Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Sajith Premadasa on Tuesday (27) morning, hours ahead of the arrival of Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe’s visit to Sri Lanka.

State Councilor and Head of China s Ministry of National Defence Wei Fenghe arrives in Dhaka this morning on a brief but important visit when he will meet top government and defence leaders and discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.
“The Chinese Defence Minister will arrive in Dhaka on Tuesday morning and leave here in the afternoon for Colombo,” a diplomatic source said, adding that Wei Fenghe will pay a two-day visit to Sri Lanka.
As per the programme schedule, the Chinese minister is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at 10:00am and then visit Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
