Worcester Red Sox notebook: A look at the first few days of action at Polar Park | Katie Morrison Updated 9:37 AM; Facebook Share WORCESTER Years of planning and hard work finally came to realization as professional baseball players took the field at Polar Park for the first time on April 1. The first five days of alternate site action in Worcester featured a wet workout, an ace appearance and a historic home run, among plenty of other storylines. The tarp was on the field to begin the day on April 1, but although the Boston Red Sox were forced to postpone their Opening Day due to the weather, the WooSox were able to get in a workout, eventually getting onto the infield dirt for practice. Red Sox Director of Player Development and Worcester native Brian Abraham was on hand for day one of the alternate site and got a chance to see the reality of professional baseball in his hometown.

Worcester Red Sox notebook: Polar Park is taking shape, as is the roster | Katie Morrison Updated Mar 19, 2021; Facebook Share Just a year ago Tuesday, the dirt lot that became Polar Park saw the first steel beam go up as construction on Worcester’s new ballpark got underway. These days, it’s looking just about ready to welcome the new Worcester Red Sox as the park finishes taking shape. With Opening Day at Polar Park pushed back to May 11, the construction has primarily focused on making sure the players have everything they need in April, when the park will open as the Red Sox’s alternate site. The delay gave the construction crew a little leeway to complete areas like the concourses, press boxes and suites. But the field itself, aside from some patches of snow and ice that don’t ever seem to get any sun, looks ready for baseball.

Erected in 1952, in the decades since, the Uxbridge Veterans Memorial located on the town’s middle school campus has housed countless events. Banners inside the gymnasium reflect athletic greatness. But its scars also show its age. A deep scratch carves up the hardwood floor from the “SWCL” logo to the sideline. Orange paint is chipping off the walls. Several water stains and repaired leaks are evident on the ceiling.
