Appeal for information following car thefts

Michaela Meade Police are appealing for information after a series of thefts from cars in Doreen on Sunday. Police from Whittlesea Crime Investigation Unit said cars containing tools were mainly targeted in the break-ins. The majority of the thefts occurred between 11.15pm and midnight in the Vaucluse, Riverstone, Plenty River and Ivy Estates in Doreen, police said. A white Mitsubishi SUV and a silver Mercedes Benz sedan were observed in the area at the time, according to police. Anybody with CCTV or Dash cam footage is asked to contact Detective Acting Sergeant Cotter at Whittlesea CIU Vehicle Crime Team on 9407 3350.

Greening Whittlesea | Northern

Michaela Meade Whittlesea council has resolved to make the city “greener, cooler, [and] more liveable” as part of its new Greening Whittlesea City Forest Strategy (GWS). The GWS is the council’s first city-wide strategy for the protection, growth and management of trees, with input from community, industry, academic, and business stakeholders. Infrastructure and environment director Debbie Wood said the strategy allows for a best practice framework for “green assets”. “The [GWS] outcomes will deliver a healthy, vibrant and sustainable city forest,” Ms Wood said. “The goal of the strategy is that our residents and our environment benefit from a diverse, colourful and healthy city forest that connects people to people, people to nature and people to their place.

Food relief comes to Mernda

Michaela Meade Encompass Care Vic is coming to Mernda. The not-for-profit charity organisation will be holding a welcome tea on Tuesday, April 27 to celebrate the start of a pilot program in the area. Chief operations officer Gianna Donato said the organisation, a recognised food hub in Melbourne, decided to bring a service to Mernda after receiving many requests for food during the COVID-19 pandemic from residents of Mernda, Doreen and Wollert. “We believe it is important to … respond to the needs in our community,” Ms Donato said. “We are excited to … meet the families who live in the area. The program will run from 9.30am until 11.30am every Tuesday, with hopes the hours can be extended to 2pm.

Mill Park house fire under investigation

The cause of a fire at a Mill Park house on Saturday morning is under investigation. Firefighters were called to the Pindari Avenue house after a caller to triple-0 reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a fire at the property about 4am. More than 25 Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters responded to the blaze. Crews arrived on the scene to find the back of the single-storey brick veneer property alight. Firefighters searched the house and found that no one was home at the time of the fire. The house sustained significant damage in the blaze. TAGS

Coolaroo man charged over alleged firearms incident

Michaela Meade A Coolaroo man has been charged over an alleged firearms incident in Bundoora earlier this month. Echo Taskforce detectives arrested the 37-year-old on Thursday following a search of a home in Norval Crescent, Coolaroo. The man was interviewed by detectives and has been charged with attempted aggravated burglary, attempted armed robbery, prohibited possession of a firearm, intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault, possession of a drug of dependence, handling stolen goods, and dealing with property suspected proceeds of crime. The charges follow an incident in Grimshaw Street, Bundoora about 11.20am on Wednesday, April 7. Police allege two men approached a 38-year-old man outside the property and produced a firearm before making demands for property.
