Positive COVID case in Vic after man leaves hotel quarantine

A man from Wollert has tested positive for coronavirus. The Department of Health has launched a full public health response after the man in his 30s returned the positive test result today. The man recently returned to Australia from overseas and completed hotel quarantine in South Australia. He arrived in Victoria and returned to his home in Wollert on Tuesday, May 4. He developed symptoms on Saturday, May 8, and was tested yesterday, May 10. The test returned positive this morning. The department said urgent further testing is being arranged to confirm the diagnosis. In the meantime, the case is being treated as positive and exposure sites are being verified.

FRV crews to remain at Campbellfield chemical incident scene

Firefighters will remain at a Campbellfield factory for several more hours, following a hazmat incident. About 55 Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters were called to the Nathan Drive factory about 10.30am, following reports of white fog coming from the factory. FRV crews found a chemical reaction had occurred inside the factory, and evacuated people from the nearby area. Firefighters escalated the response, with scientific officers, aerial support units and hazmat crews called to the scene. The incident was brought under control in under two hours. Firefighters are working with Environment Protection Authority Victoria, Worksafe, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria at the scene to ensure it is safe.

Retirees walk around the world

Retirees in South Morang have banded together to walk around the world – with a twist. Residents at Stockland’s Arilla retirement village began tracking their steps with a click-o-metre in a bid to keep active during last year’s lockdowns. They cover distances of up to 1000 kilometres each week, and have now walked the equivalent of mainland Great Britain’s 17,820 kilometre coastline. Resident Kathy Upton said the community at the village has been “incredibly supportive”. “I was able to meet with other residents which has really helped me feel connected to not only my neighbours but the wider community,” she said.

Circus comes to town | Northern

Michaela Meade The circus is coming to Craigieburn. The Circus Royale’s 50th anniversary tour will be in town at Craigieburn Central until Sunday, May 16. Owner and ringmaster Damian Syred said the group is excited to return to the centre. “After being closed for 12 months due to COVID restrictions, it’s great to be back on the road performing,” he said. “While we were closed, we had so many inquiries from Craigieburn locals asking when we would be returning – so it’s great to be back.” Families can come along to see a two-hour performance of contortion, clowning, juggling, Russian swing, acrobatics and much more.

New shelter a refuge for cats

Victoria’s largest cat shelter has officially opened in the northern suburbs. Following a challenging 2020, the Cat Protection Society of Victoria is able to celebrate its new shelter, with the capacity to provide care for up to 300 cats. The organisation’s chief executive Ian Crook said the team were thrilled to open the new shelter in Greensborough. “This is an incredible opportunity to help more cats in need and engage with the local community,” he said. “We can now provide short term care for over 200 more cats in the shelter than in our temporary facility and have also been able to significantly expand our veterinary services.
