Carpinteria Council Votes to Split the City into 5 Districts for Future Elections As part of the city s efforts to transition to the by-district election system for the first time, the City Council voted to divide the city into five districts By Jade Martinez-Pogue, Noozhawk Staff Writer | @MartinezPogue  July 27, 2021 | 5:00 p.m. In its first run at transitioning to the by-district election system, the Carpinteria City Council has voted to divide the city into five districts for the November 2022 elections, with the mayor continuing to be appointed every two years by the council. “This is kind of the launching point,” said City Manager Dave Durflinger. By answering these questions tonight, it really cuts us loose to start doing the public outreach process.

Carpinteria high school student named 2020 Junior Carpinterian of the Year

Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce Flores, Alarcon and Williams with Elected Officials. CARPINTERIA, Calif. The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce announced the 2020 Junior Carpinterian of the Year on Monday afternoon. Lucia Alarcon was named the 2020 Junior Carpinterian of the Year. Alarcon receiving a plaque from Congressman Carbajal. Laura Flores from Carpinteria High School and Luke Williams from Bishop Diego High School were the finalists. Alarcon will receive a $4,000 scholarship and Laura Flores and Luke Williams will each receive $1,500 scholarships. “The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding seniors for their leadership abilities and special contributions to their school, to Carpinteria and beyond. While academic standing is important, community and school involvement are usually the deciding factor, said Joyce Donaldson, COO and Carpinteria Liaison of the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce. 

Top three finalists selected for Jr Carpinterian of the Year

In a year filled with the unexpected, one thing has been constant: the rigorous pursuit for excellence among Carpinteria’s most ambitious teenagers. Among this cohort of exceptional Carpinteria young people are three seniors, Laura Flores, Isa Alarcon and Luke Williams, who have been selected as finalists for Jr. Carpinterian of the Year, an honor bestowed annually to one graduating senior by the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce.  Flores, Alarcon and Williams have excelled in academics, sports and civic engagement, and each will receive a scholarship from the chamber. The student named Jr. Carpinterian of the Year will receive a $4,000 scholarship and each of the two finalists will receive $1,500 scholarships.

Nomura is serving his third 4-year term. What I would like to say to the community is thank you very much for not only voting, but coming up with a council that is extremely competent, Nomura said. I look forward to working with this new council to make sure that we as a council keep the community s best interests at hand. Nomura said he loves Carpinteria. I consider Carpinteria my paradise, Nomura said. My paradise is where I live. One of things I realized is that I have to do, that we all have to do, is to invest to make sure that paradise stays your paradise.
