New Walker police chief rose through the ranks

He will replace Chief Greg Long on July 31 when Long retires.
Mankel worked his way through the ranks to become police chief. He started as a dispatcher for Walker police in 1993. He was a patrol officer, patrol sergeant and in 2016 was named captain.
He also served nearly seven years as a firefighter for Walker Fire Department.
“Captain Mankel has been a tremendous leader for our city for many years and has a strong following not just within our police department, but also our city staff and other local agencies,” Walker Mayor Gary Carey Jr. said in a statement issued Tuesday, May 11.

WALKER, Mich. â There are a couple new drop boxes around Walker for people to retire and dispose of their American flags.
Theyâre already very popular in under four months.
Itâs a red, white and blue project involving the American Legion, an Eagle Scout, and the City.
FLAG RETIREMENT BOXES
American Legion Post 1111 recently put out a flag collection box, and itâs already collected hundreds of unserviceable flags.
Itâs a fairly small box with a very big purpose: collect worn American flags so they can officially be retired.
