Gen Prawit s assistant spokesman, Patchasak Patirupanont, said the deputy PM had ordered the Office of National Water Resources, the Interior Ministry and the Royal Irrigation Department to provide assistance to those who might be affected by the heavy rain brought on by the strong southwesterly monsoon winds which are prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The highway was closed to traffic near kilometre marker 81 in Tha Song Yang district and also between Ban Samae and Mae Tuen in tambon Mae Tuen in Mae Ramat district. The chiefs of Tha Song Yang and Mae Ramat district asked the army for help and the 33rd Mobile Development Unit was assigned the task.

KANCHANABURI: Officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation have impounded a four-year-old elephant at an elephant camp, on suspicion it was caught in the wild. Wildlife officials, accompanied by local police, went to the Wang Chan elephant camp of Riviere Kwai Elephants Co in tambon Wang Dong of Muang district on Thursday. They were met by the owner s son, Kenji Alison. Mongkol Chaipakdee, a chief ranger, said Mr Kenji had sought permission to transfer the elephant to Kanchanaburi s Muang district on Oct 27 last year.
