Hurricane Tauktae is the strongest storm to hit the area in more than two decades. It reached ashore in Gujarat State at speeds of 210 kilometers (130 miles) per hour on Monday night. The storm caused more than 50 deaths in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

New Delhi: Fourteen people have died as a barge sank off India’s west coast after cyclone Tauktae barrelled into the country, authorities said on Wednesday. Indian navy ships and aircraft scoured waters to locate scores of other missing personnel.
“We can confirm that 14 bodies have been recovered from the rescue operation of Barge P305 that sank off the coast of Mumbai”, Mehul Karnik, chief public relations officer, Western Naval Command told Reuters.

The death toll from Cyclone Tauktae in India jumped Wednesday as the navy retrieved 22 bodies from the Arabian Sea on Wednesday.
The 22 people were on a barge that sank as Tautkae neared landfall Monday. A search continues for another 55 missing crew members, navy spokesman Mehul Karnik told the Associated Press.
At least 45 people were killed by the storm in the state of Gujarat, where Tauktae roared ashore late Monday, the Press Institute of India reported. Most of those deaths involved collapsing walls and roofs or falling trees.
