Mehlville Fire approves preliminary tax rates after 9 5-percent hike for assessments

The Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors has unanimously approved preliminary tax rates for this year that likely equate to the lowest rates in the county. At the April 7 meeting, Chief Financial Officer Brian Bond told board members Aaron Hilmer, Bonnie Stegman and Ed Ryan that preliminary assessed values had increased nearly 9.5 percent since the 2020 tax rates were fixed, with a 7.64-percent increase in residential property assessed values and a 12.85-percent increase in commercial assessed values. Bond used the 2021 tax rate calculator on the Missouri state auditor’s website to project the 2020 nonbinding tax rate, which is the maximum allowable amount that may be levied.

Murphy is keeping busy in the Legislature

Rep. Jim Murphy has had a busy legislative session in 2021 working on state oversight on public-health orders and setting up a mass vaccination event while also conducting a series of food drives in South County to help with food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. In November, Murphy defeated Mehlville Board of Education director Jean Pretto 52.92 percent to 47.08 percent, in a rematch of the 2018 election that was once again a close race. The 101st General Assembly kicked off Jan. 6 and wraps in May, barring any special sessions. Murphy’s House Bill 75 requires that local governmental bodies gain state permission to extend public health or safety closures and has passed the House and could pass in the Senate. The bill is a direct response to COVID and St. Louis County.

MFPD replaces truck used for salting during snow and ice; was damaged in crash

The Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors unanimously approved the roughly $25,000 purchase of a new administrative truck Jan. 13, after Chief Brian Hendricks explained that the previous one was totaled in a wreck Jan. 8 on northbound Interstate 270 and Gravois Road. “One of our maintenance guys who was involved in the accident was not hurt too terribly bad. They’re a little beat up, but he’s OK,” said Hendricks. “We have heard from AAA and the vehicle is officially totaled.” The 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck was used to “move a multitude of things around the district” and was also used as the primary plow vehicle for snow removal and spreading salt, Hendricks noted.
