After investigating a May 5 report of an alleged robbery at gunpoint, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office, has decided to no longer pursue the case, Lt. Melvin Castillo said Tuesday.
The department’s investigation concluded that the supposed victim, a 28-year-old man working as a FedEx driver, was not credible.
“The detective that investigated the case briefed with the DA, and due to lack of witness cooperation, the case has been left unfounded and closed,” Castillo said. “The driver has been found to be uncredible.”

Sheriff seeks man after Santa Clara shootout Written by Aaron Rogers on May 11, 2021
The sheriff is on the lookout for a Grant County man in connection with a shooting in Santa Clara earlier this month that saw dozens of shots fired and one man wounded.
While the exact extent of involvement of those who were present during the shooting is still under investigation, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of 27-year-old Joseph Chavez on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
“He is considered armed and dangerous,” Lt. Melvin Castillo of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Press. “We would strongly request that no citizen approach him. We request that they contact law enforcement immediately.”
