Man charged with murder of his grandparents in Eugene Updated May 11, 2021; Nicholas Borden-Cortez was arraigned Monday in Lane County Circuit Court, The Register-Guard reported. Along with two counts of first-degree murder, Borden-Cortez was charged with two counts of abuse of a corpse and attempting to elude police officers. Eugene police identified the victims Monday as Borden-Cortez’s grandmother, Nancy Loucks-Morris, 85, and his step-grandfather, Gerald Morris, 87. Police responded to a report of “suspicious conditions” at a home in the Falconwood Mobile Home Park just before 10:30 a.m. Friday, she said. Borden-Cortez was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Friday following a vehicle chase that ended in Springfield, according to Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin. During the chase, Borden-Cortez called 911 and told dispatchers he had a gun, she said.

Teen dies in Eugene car crash, four teen passengers sent to hospital

Police identified the 17-year-old Eugene teen Wednesday evening.  Four passengers, between 15 and 18 years old, suffered various levels of injuries and were transported to a local hospital, Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Tuesday.  The Register-Guard is not identifying the passengers because they are minors and victims in an accident. Emergency personnel responded to the crash near the intersection of Patterson Street and East 23rd Avenue a little after 6 p.m. Truax was declared deceased shortly after officers arrived, McLaughlin said. Speed and impairment by inhalants are being investigated as contributing factors to the crash, she added. The Eugene Police Department s Major Collision Investigation team is investigating the crash. Eugene police have not released any other information regarding the details of the crash.

Man charged with two felonies for assaulting Dutch Bros barista

Prosecutors have charged a 25-year-old man with two felonies for assaulting a coffee stand worker early Monday morning.  Jesus Martinez-Escudero faces charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault after Eugene police say he assaulted a barista at a Dutch Bros. drive-thru near the University of Oregon campus.  According to a news release, the Eugene Police Department received a report around 5:30 a.m. Monday that a man had attacked a worker at the Dutch Bros. drive-thru at 2115 Franklin Blvd.  The man, now identified as Martinez-Escudero, was wearing a mask that concealed his nose and mouth. He tried to grab the worker and then hit her with a blunt object, EPD spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said in the release.
