January is Alzheimer’s awareness month and every year the Alzheimer’s Society of Hastings Prince Edward hold a Walk for Alzheimer’s event to help raise funds and awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.
This year’s event is going to be a little bit different. Those interested in participating will be able to walk their own route. Whether that is in town, snowshoeing a favourite trail or even ice skating around a homemade hockey rink, participants are encouraged to find what works best for them while physically and socially distancing. This year a grand prize draw will be held that is open to anyone who raised $25 or more. For each $25 raised, the participant’s name will be entered into the draw.
A resident of Maple Leaf is going to be snowmobiling for charity.
Wes Oram and a group of friends will be hitting the trails for Snowmobile Ride For Mom to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society of Hastings Prince Edward. But Oram says it isn’t going to be a short trip. He plans to snowmobile from Maple Leaf to Cochrane Ontario, a trip Oram says will take the group over 1000 kilometres of Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails. Oram says that he has had a lot of experience snowmobiling on Northern Ontario trails, and has done long trips before. He says the team will carry extra gas and food, and they have plans if one of the team’s snowmobile breaks down. Oram says that the team could make the trip in 24 hours with appropriate stops for food and fuel, but says this timeline is not set in stone.
