WASHINGTON: The new US administration plans to continue building relations with Pakistan and especially with its military on key issues. Pakistan is an essential partner in any peace process in Afghanistan, the nominated Secretary of Defence, Gen Lloyd Austin, told a panel of the Senate Arms Services Committee during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday. If confirmed, I will encourage a regional approach that garners support from neighbours like Pakistan, while also deterring regional actors, from serving as spoilers to the Afghanistan peace process,” he said.
Gen Austin has served as a head of the U.S. Central Command. If confirmed, he will be the first African American to hold the position.
The objective of the incoming Biden Administration is to continue elevating the US' defense partnership with India, the Defense Secretary nominee told lawmakers.

New Delhi–The defence relationship has emerged as a major pillar in ties between India and the US over the last few years with intensification in defence trade, joint exercises, personnel exchanges, and cooperation in maritime security and counter-piracy.
The strategic partnership between both countries is expected to strengthen further with a new government in the US led by President Joe Biden that is expected to carry out “steady investment and recalibration rather than redesigning” its Indo-Pacific agenda.
The defence and security relationship between both the countries will “continue to deepen, aided by robust political commitments in both countries and converging concerns about growing Chinese assertiveness across the Indo-Pacific.”
