He tested positive on April 20 and was undergoing treatment in hospital
Former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, who was lodged in Tihar jail, died of COVID-19 at a city hospital on Saturday.
Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel confirmed the development.
Prison officials said gangster-turned-politician Shahabuddin, who was serving serving life imprisonment in Tihar, tested positive on April 20 and was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he died during treatment.
When his condition deteriorated two days ago, he was put on ventilator at the hospital.
Mr. Goel told news agency
PTI “information has been received from Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital in Delhi about the death of Mohd Shahabuddin. He was suffering from COVID-19 and was admitted in DDU on April 20”.

Former RJD MP Shahabuddin dies of Covid
It was not just his life, but even the days leading up to the death of former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin entailed denial, conflicting reports and court orders. The former Rashtriya Janata Dal leader passed away on Saturday with Covid infection at a hospital in Delhi. While earlier the Tihar jail authorities had refuted the circulating rumours about his death, DG (Tihar) Sandeep Goel finally confirmed the news to media.

Shahabuddin was diagnosed with Covid-19 on April 20 and he was later admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. It must be noted that on Wednesday itself, the Delhi High Court had directed the Aam Aadmi Party and the prison authorities to provide Shahabuddin with proper medical supervision. The court had also stated that the doctor looking after Covid-19 patients shall monitor Shahabuddin s health and treatment. He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital only three days ago.

New DelhiFormer Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammad Shahabuddin has died in a hospital in Delhi. The Bihar Bahubali leader reportedly died from COVID-19, however, there is no official confirmation on this yet.
Mohammad Shahabuddin, who was serving life imprisonment for the murder, died at the age of 53.
The news of his demise came after the Delhi High Court directed the AAP government and the jail authority to ensure proper medical care and care of Shahabuddin.
Justice Prathiba M Singh had said that doctors would monitor Shahabuddin’s health status and treatment for the care of COVID-19 patients and, if necessary, consult senior doctors of the hospital as well.
