(Klas Stolpe) Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Aukeman Triathlon is set to splash off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with the 750-meter swim on Auke Lake, transitioning to a 19K bike ride to the glacier and back, and finishing with an out-and-back 5K run from the University of Alaska Southeast campus to complete the sprint distance course.
“It’s just a quiet little race this year,” Aukeman race director Liz Smith said. “We haven’t done any advertising, but we have been full for over a month.”
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - It went below zero in Juneau overnight.
Here s Meteorologist Rick Fritsch in the Juneau Forecast Office on Back Loop Road said the temperature got to at least minus four degrees at the official Juneau Airport station. Since that conversation, it s reported that the temperature dropped to minus 5.
It hit minus 14 at their office, he said.
The 50 mile per hour winds downtown produced a wind chill of minus 18.
It s been quite some time since the temperature went below zero at the official airport station. The forecaster said that happened last on January 7, 2009, when it dipped to minus 9.
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - It s forecast to get real cold in Juneau.
Meteorologist Pete Boyd in the Juneau Forecast Office says we have what could possibly be an extremely high pressure that s going to be building over Canada and Alaska. That s going to be bringing in some very cold air to the region. We re looking at temperatures in at least the single digits nearing zero, possibly lower and high temperatures only in the teens.
He said the cold temperatures are forecast to start up Sunday night and lasting into Monday and Tuesday.
We asked about the last time the temperature fell below zero. The forecaster says the last time the Juneau Airport got below zero was on January 12 of 2014. He said it fell to minus three at their office on Back Loop Road last year on January 11. The last time the airport dropped to single digits was on January 13 of last year.
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - This past weekend s snowfall varied greatly around the city and borough.
Edward Liske, the lead forecaster at the Juneau Forecast Office, says 2.5 inches was recorded at the airport; 6.5 inches at the Juneau Forecast Office on Back Loop Road, and 7.7 inches at the Juneau Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plant at the Rock Dump downtown.
KINY Eagles are protected by two federal statutes. Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - After a bald eagle was found shot last week in Juneau, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a $2,500 reward for credible information leading to the conviction of a responsible party.
The injured eagle was found on Klondike Way in the Back Loop Road area of Juneau on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Kathy Benner, with the Juneau Raptor Center, said the eagle was shot with lead, which is illegal to hunt with. The eagle had a gunshot wound, elevated levels of lead, and a broken pelvis.
The Juneau Raptor Center rescued the bird but quickly transferred it to the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka for advanced care. The eagle was later euthanized.
