BJP weathers Trinamool storm in north Bengal, maintains Lok Sabha gains
The tally of winning seats for the saffron party in north Bengal looks reasonable even after the overall setback , political analyst Subhomay Maitra said.

KOLKATA: Though the BJP failed to dislodge Mamata Banerjee from power, the saffron party managed to weather the TMC storm emerging triumphant in 25 of 42 constituencies in six districts of the region in the high- octane assembly elections.
Nevertheless, the result was below BJPs impressive performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when the saffron camp was ahead in 31 assembly segments in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.

New Delhi, May 4 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed his anguish and concern over West Bengal post poll violence in a telephonic conversation with state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, asking him to restore law and order.
In a tweet, Dhankhar informed that the Prime Minister called him to take stock of alarmingly worrisome law and order situation in the state where reports of arson and violence came from parts of the state on Sunday evening even as trends and results of the Assembly election were pouring in.

New May 4 : After reports of violence erupting in different parts of West Bengal following the declaration of Assembly election results on May 2 in which the ruling Trinamool Congress cruised to a landslide victory, the Congress said on Tuesday that Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee should take steps to stop the bloodshed.
Congress West Bengal in-charge Jitin Prasada said, The post-poll violence that has been unleashed by the Trinamool on the Congress workers is unacceptable. Even women and children are not spared. I m sure the people of West Bengal did not vote for this lawlessness.

At a time turncoats lost in most parts of Bengal, north Bengal saw a sharp contrast with many candidates who defected to the BJP proving to be giant-slayers.
Veteran CPM leader Asok Bhattacharya, a six-time MLA and a former state minister from Siliguri, faced defeat from Shankar Ghosh, his former protégé who joined the BJP a few weeks before the polls.
Trinamul leaders who were ministers in Mamata Banerjee’s outgoing cabinet, Gautam Deb and Rabindranath Ghosh, also lost from Dabgram-Fulbari and Natabari, respectively. Deb lost to Shikha Chatterjee, a BJP leader who deserted Trinamul in 2018. Ghosh conceded defeat to his former party colleague Mihir Goswami who joined the BJP last year. Krishna Kalyani, the BJP candidate of Raiganj who left Trinamul a few weeks back, defeated Mohit Sengupta, the most prominent Congress leader of North Dinajpur.
