However, despite the elections coming to an end, political violence continued in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused TMC workers of torching its offices and attacking party workers while the results were being declared on Sunday. At least nine people have reportedly died and many others have suffered injuries as a result of the violence.

Image Source: IANS News New Delhi, May 3 : The Union Home Ministry on Monday sought a report from the West Bengal government on the post election violence in the state targeting opposition political workers. The Home Ministry in a letter to the West Bengal Chief Secretary has asked him to submit a detailed report on the violence that broke out in parts of the state on Sunday evening even as trends and results from the Assembly election were pouring in. The houses and vehicles of some Bharatiya Janata Party candidates were allegedly attacked and a party office at Arambagh was set on fire. The vehicle of Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, was also reportedly attacked.

While the Election Commission website is yet to reflect the final tally, there are some clear trends that have emerged. In the months leading up to the elections, many politicians had switched sides, primarily from the BJP to the TMC. But while they were rewarded by their new party with election tickets, these did not pan out in most cases. As the votes were tallied, most of the candidates that defected from the ruling TMC, were either trailing or had already tasted defeat. To matters worse, many of these individuals had been seeking reelection.
