SURAT : Several areas of the Diamond City were inundated after Mithi Khadi (creek) started overflowing due to continuous rainfall.
The waters had not receded till Monday late afternoon.
The road near Essar Petrol pump in Parvat Patia was submerged while the Madhav Baug area remained heavily waterlogged till evening. Bhathena crossroad was also submerged in water. Hundreds of employees and owners of textile units and shops were affected due to the water logging.
A private transport bus got stranded in over three foot water in Saniya Hemad village on the city’s outskirts. Villagers used a tractor to pull the bus out. The village has been included in Surat Municipal Corporation limits recently.
SMC staff came out on roads asking shop owners and traders to close their units
Surat: City police along with the officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Wednesday began strict enforcement of the new curbs announced by the state government till May 5.
However, businessmen in diamond and textile markets complained that they were not given enough time to make arrangements to keep their units closed for a week.
SMC staff came out on road asking shop owners and traders to close their units. However, offices were allowed to operate with 50% strength. Diamond and textile units also remained operational.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat reported a record 9,541 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state s tally to 3,94,229, and 97 deaths, also a single-day fatality peak, while 3,783 people were discharged post recovery, an official said on Saturday.
The state s toll stands at 5,267, and the recovery count is 3,33,564, or 84.61 per cent of the caseload, leaving it with 55,398 active cases, including 304 on ventilator support, he said.

India s diamond hub Surat abuzz after prolonged lull
While many stakeholders in the industry see the recent rise in production as a temporary affair driven by the festive season, some are hopeful that it will continue.

While a majority of sectors have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, raw diamond cutting and polishing units in and around Surat city of Gujarat are abuzz with activities after a prolonged lull.
Media reports say that India is the world’s largest cutting and polishing centre of rough diamonds, and 14 out of every 15 rough diamonds in the world are polished here. Surat is the hub for cutting, polishing and processing rough diamonds and 85 percent of the diamonds are exported. The diamond sector was facing a slowdown in recent years. The situation worsened from in the last week of March when the nationwide lockdown was announced.
