“It’s not uncommon for young, especially male bears in the springtime to kind of wander from the north, down to southern Michigan looking for food (and) resources,” Vaughn said.
A bear had been spotted in Shiawassee County about a week ago, Vaughn said, and the bear killed Monday could be the same one.
The department gets a couple of these collision calls every spring.
To keep bears out of your vicinity, Vaughn encouraged people to take away food sources like trash cans and bird feeders. If you see wildlife on the road, swerving to avoid the animal can pose a greater threat to the driver than collision, Vaughn said, so be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

EMMET COUNTY A Sault man was arrested and faces charges for motor vehicle theft and illegal use of financial transaction device.
On the morning of Oct. 5, 2020, a trooper from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post was dispatched to a residence on East Levering Road in Bliss Township for a stolen vehicle complaint. The victim said he woke up in the morning and noticed his vehicle missing from the driveway. He had left his keys and debit card inside the vehicle.
The victim learned through his bank that someone attempted to use his debit card in Houghton Lake and Lansing, but the person entered the wrong PIN, and the transaction was declined. The vehicle, a 2007 Buick Rendezvous, was entered in the Law Enforcement Information Network as stolen. The following day it was recovered in Clinton County. GAINES TWP., Mich â A 26-year-old man from Hartland was killed Saturday when a novelty cannon exploded during a baby shower near Flint.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in Gaines Township, which is southwest of Flint.
A small cannon-type device was fired in the backyard of a home by the home s owner, police said. The cannon, which was similar to a Signal Cannon, blew up, causing metal and shrapnel to hit three parked vehicles and the victim.
The victim has been identified as Evan Thomas Silva. He was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint where he later died from his injuries.
