“It’s not uncommon for young, especially male bears in the springtime to kind of wander from the north, down to southern Michigan looking for food (and) resources,” Vaughn said.
A bear had been spotted in Shiawassee County about a week ago, Vaughn said, and the bear killed Monday could be the same one.
The department gets a couple of these collision calls every spring.
To keep bears out of your vicinity, Vaughn encouraged people to take away food sources like trash cans and bird feeders. If you see wildlife on the road, swerving to avoid the animal can pose a greater threat to the driver than collision, Vaughn said, so be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
