The money will sustain Missoula and Bitterroot Valley nonprofits after an unprecedented year. “We set an ambitious goal for $1 million this year and we are humbled and honored that our community stepped up to meet it,” said Marcy Allen, executive director of Missoula Community Foundation. “We couldn’t be more grateful.” The total raised contributed to the most significant day of community giving this year. “It’s not just the money we raised that makes Missoula Gives so special,” Allen said. “It’s the all-boats-rise collective effort, the camaraderie that comes from working toward a big goal together, and the ultimate impact these funds will have on our community.”

From Thursday evening through Friday evening, just over 3,800 individuals donated almost $1.1 million to nonprofits through ‘Missoula Gives.’ Marcy Allen, Executive Director of the Missoula Community Foundation made the announcement to KGVO News late Friday. “We set a really ambitious goal this year and I felt like the nonprofit community really needed us to increase the amount raised and they were really looking for support, especially after this past year and because they ve done so much for our community,” said Allen. “As we started out the day we crept up to four o clock, I think maybe on Friday afternoon, and we started to approach that million dollar mark, which was really exciting. We closed out donations at 7:00 p.m. and we were at $1.1 million.”

It s been going since 2001, and this year they ve got to do things a little bit differently. For the 21st annual Bike For Shelter in May, the Watson Children s Center is going virtual. Essentially, you re encouraged to ride your bike all throughout the month of May on any of the Bike For Shelter routes that they ve laid out on their website. When you do it, you can help raise money, post about it on social media, and in a new addition to this year, participate in a scavenger hunt throughout Missoula.

From opening day in 1995, to a global pandemic in 2020, Cox, the executive director of the carousel, has seen it all, but still admits that 2020 threw her for a loop. “I don t think anybody s ever experienced a year like 2020,” said Cox. Since its start, A Carousel for Missoula has only ever closed down for a couple weeks at a time usually in January to paint the horses, and a brief stint in August of 2019 for a broken cylinder.
