PARAMUS A discarded gravestone spotted on the side of a road last week turns out to have been a marker that was removed from a cemetery and replaced many years ago.
The gravestone was noticed by a driver on Soldier Hill Road across the street from Garden of Memories cemetery on Friday, as first reported by CBS News. It bears the name of Jack Katz, who died in 1937.
The monument is inscribed in Hebrew and English, and has the words Brother and Gone but not forgotten.
Motorist Joe Schrader of New Milford spotted the monument among a pile of tree roots and debris, according to CBS News.

The shingle-style, 25-room estate, which sits atop a long grassy hill on Kinderkamack Road at Soldier Hill Road, has been in limbo for years. CareOne, a network of assisted living facilities, had contracted with the mansion s former owner, Jeffrey Wells, to build an assisted-care facility on the property’s front lawn in 2007, but two proposals have been rejected by the borough.
CareOne bought the property outright in a foreclosure auction in 2013, and no new plans for the site have been proposed since.
