What was set to be the city s 17th annual celebration, however, was derailed by COVID-19. Pandemic concerns discouraged service organizations from making their usual raffle ticket sales, large gatherings were a threat to public health, and Crowner s best laid plans were delayed but not laid to waste.
With COVID-19 vaccines now widely available, the threat of the virus has diminished for those vaccinated, and Crowner was able to build upon the previous year s efforts. Burlington s Pride in the Park returns with community support
The Hawk Eye
Just as they had done in 2019, members of Burlington s LGBTQ community descended on Crapo Park Saturday to celebrate who they are.
Pride in the Park, Burlington s Pride festival, began in 2018 when people threatened to crash a Pride celebration Burlington High School student Aiden Orton was having with his friends. The threats spurred adult members of Burlington s LGBTQ community to rally around the teen and the event, working with Orton to arrange for vendors to be present, as well as for a parade.
It grew substantially in 2019, but COVID-19 derailed things last year when Burlington Pride, the organization that since has taken over the event s planning, had to hold a much smaller event.
