Police: El Paso driver hits man on bus bench in Montwood rollover

View Comments A driver ran onto a curb and struck a man sitting on a bus bench before slamming into an electric pole Wednesday in East El Paso, police said. The single-vehicle rollover knocked down the electric pole, closing a portion of Montwood Drive in the Vista Del Sol area for hours. Police officials said the crash occurred at 10:36 a.m. Wednesday when Aaron Corey Ruiz, 26, was driving a Kia Soul westbound on Montwood near a bend on the road by Lee Elder Drive.  Ruiz lost control at the curve, veered right, jumped the curb and hit Guillermo Guzman, 64, who was sitting on a bus bench, police said. The Kia kept going, crashing into an electric pole, rolling and ending up on its side.

Crash into electric pole shuts down Montwood Drive in East El Paso

Lanes on Montwood Drive were shut down late Wednesday morning after a vehicle crashed into an electric pole, El Paso police said. The rollover accident occurred before noon on Montwood Drive by Tom Bolt Drive in the Vista Del Sol area of the East Side. All lanes on Montwood Drive were closed between Lee Elder and Mermaid drives, police said. One man was transported with serious injuries, police said. Driver of car that struck man before crashing into power pole arrested by El Paso police UPDATE, May 6: The driver of a car that struck a a man sitting on a bench before slamming into an electric pole and rolling over in the Lower Valley has been arrested, El Paso police said Thursday as they also revealed that the jailed motorist had a child with him in the car at the time of the crash. The incident happened Wednesday in the 11100 block of Montwood Drive, causing the closure of the roadway for hours and triggering a power outage for hundreds in the area.

Police SWAT situation underway in East El Paso

The El Paso police SWAT team rescued two small children and took a man into custody Monday afternoon in East El Paso. The SWAT team and crisis negotiators dealt with a man barricaded in a home with two small children in the 2200 block of Cumbre Negra Street near Montwood Drive and Yarbrough Drive. The situation began as a domestic violence incident when the man allegedly assaulted a woman and broke her cellphone to prevent her from calling for help, said Sgt. Enrique Carrillo, a police spokesman. While doing online homeschooling, one of the children asked a teacher for help. The teacher called 911, leading to a police response, Carrillo said.

Man critically injured in Gentilly Court shooting, police ivnestigating

A man was critically injured in a shooting in Montgomery early Saturday morning. Montgomery police Cpl. Ernestina McGriff said officers were called to the 3100 block of Montwood Drive about 9 a.m. Saturday in reference to the shooting.  The victim was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound and taken to a hospital for treatment, McGriff said.  Before the victim was taken to the hospital, he told police the shooting occurred near the 3100 block of Gentilly Court, less than a mile from where the man was found by police.  McGriff said no further information was available for release.  Contact Montgomery Advertiser reporter Kirsten Fiscus at 334-318-1798 or KFiscus@gannett.com.
