Coleman, who was appointed a public defender in court Tuesday, entered a not-guilty plea to charges that include murder in the first degree in the death of her daughter Kesha, as well as gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing bodily injury and child cruelty.
Deputy District Attorney David Uyar told NBC 7 that Coleman is being charged with murder instead of vehicular homicide because of applied malice theory prosecutors believe she knew that driving under the influence was dangerous and knowingly put her kids at risk.
Uyar told the court that, according to preliminary hospital results, Coleman had a blood-alcohol content of 0.167 at the time of the crash, and traces of other drugs were found in her system as well, including cocaine, amphetamines and marijuana.

A brush fire that scorched 7 1/2 acres north of Escondido prompting the closure of southbound Interstate 15 for more than three hours on Saturday afternoon was reported 100 percent contained Sunday evening.
Investigators believe the blaze, which ignited around 11:30 a.m. Saturday near Deer Springs Road, was sparked by metal fragments from a catalytic converter as a vehicle drove on the freeway, a Cal Fire spokesman said. The fire was on the side of the freeway and quickly ran up a ridge in a wilderness area, with flames at one point jumping the southbound lanes and igniting a spot fire in the center divide.

SAN DIEGO Fire crews are on the scene of a now seven-acre brush fire off Deer Springs Road and southbound I-15 Saturday afternoon.
Two lanes of SB I-15 have since reopened at Gopher Canyon Rd, but authorities note to drive with caution in the area.
The fire started around 11:30 a.m. near I-15 and Deer Springs Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.
