SAN ANTONIO - A new bill has passed the Texas Senate making it possible for all high school seniors to graduate whether they passed the STAAR test or not!
Representative Diego Bernal’s House Bill 999 Passed in the Texas Senate Wednesday.
Because the COVID-19 pandemic has been really hard on students due to school closures, some high school students have lost up to four STAAR testing opportunities in Algebra I, English I, and Biology.
So this bill will temporarily expand the qualifications for Individual Graduation Committees (IGCs) - a review of a student s academic accomplishments - making them available to all seniors regardless of their performance on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR).

The Sandwich School District has received a grant through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that will provide Chromebooks to dozens of families in need.
Assistant Superintendent Maureen Wiklund said she had applied for the grant last spring when the schools closed due to the pandemic, because the district quickly realized that some families did not have a computer at home.
Not only did this mean that a number of students were unable to access their classwork and virtual meetings, but not having a device at home means that those families might not be able to access other things such as soccer registration and, more recently, setting up COVID-19 vaccination appointments.
