Shaquille Nunez
A 27-year-old Belizean artist, Shaquille Nunez also known as “Cross the Nitro”, has been remanded on charges of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. On Saturday, December 19, Nunez allegedly kept a 9mm CZ pistol and eight live rounds of Aguila brand ammunition in his possession, neither of which he carried a license for. To answer to the charges, he appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and explained to the Magistrate that his constitutional rights were violated since he was never given an opportunity to contact his attorney. A note of his complaint was made but due to the nature of the offense, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until February 15, 2021.
Joshua Martels
It has now been a month since the shooting attempted murder which left a 15-year-old minor injured. It took place on Sunday, November 15, 2020 in Ladyville while the victim was in the company of 33-year-old Shane Bahadur, a well-known figure to law enforcement. Charged for this incident is 20-year-old Joshua Martels of Lord’s Bank, Ladyville who appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett. He was read the charge of attempted murder but due to the nature of the charge, no plea was taken and bail could not be offered. Magistrate Gillett explained that because it is an indictable offense, he would have to apply for bail at the Supreme Court. Until then, he is on remand at the Belize Central Prison. If he is not granted bail at the Supreme Court, he will be remanded until February 8, 2020.
Justin Burns
21-year-old Kyle Latchman, a resident of George Street, and 19-year-old Justin Burns of Los Lagos were arraigned in court on separate charges of being members of two separate gangs. Latchman was the first to be arraigned before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett. It is alleged that he is a member of the George Street Gang while Burns is alleged to be a member of the Banak Street Gang. Both groups are known to engage in the conducting of serious crimes.
Both Latchman and Burns pleaded guilty and were each fined $3,000 to be paid by January 15, 2021 for Latchman and January 30, 2021 for Burns. If they fail to pay these fines, they will spend three years in prison.
Sydney Gordon
A Hattieville couple is in debt to the court in the sum of $20,000 which they accumulated when they appeared in the Belize Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply. Shawn Bainton, a 37-year-old construction worker, and Sydney Gordon, a 34-year-old hairdresser, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett. To the charge, Gordon had initially pleaded guilty saying that she used the marijuana to cope with her asthma. The prosecutor, however, indicated that while Gordon pleaded guilty, it would not be automatic that the charge be withdrawn from Bainton. He was found with $1,395 along with drugs which would still be confiscated. Bainton became irate, saying that the funds were not from the sale of drugs but instead monies that his mother had sent for him for the construction of a home. That is when he also pleaded guilty to the charge.
