Massillon voters who closely follow Washington High School football will see familiar names on the November election ballot.
The Stark County Board of Elections on Monday voted to certify five nonpartisan candidates for the Nov. 2 ballot.
Two of the candidates are a father and son who are both seeking to serve on Massillon City Council. They both were quarterbacks for Washington High.
Lee Hurst, 50, is running to be Massillon council member at large. Hurst will seek one of three council seats in a five-person race.
Hurst, who also was a kicker as well as quarterback, led Washington High School to the state semifinals in 1989. He later became a head high school football coach at Crestline High School in Crawford County in 2013 and West Muskingum High School in Zanesville in 2016. He also was a girls softball coach at McKinley High School in 2015 and was an assistant freshman football coach for Washington High in 2015.
Green interviewing two applicants for treasurer position

SMITHVILLE The Green Local Schools Board of Education is in the final stages of choosing a new treasurer to replace Barbara Markland, whose resignation is effective May 21.
The board is planning a second round of interviews Thursday. It screened five applicants on paper April 29 and narrowed the process to two finalists, said Superintendent Dean Frank.
VanMeter, Wilson are the finalists
The two finalists are Erin R. VanMeter, an assistant treasurer in Louisville City Schools, and James E. Wilson, a bursar at Lorain County Community College.
VanMeter earned a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Walsh University and a master s of business administration from Ashland University. She has served as an assistant staff accountant at Stark State College and in the role of payroll and accounts payable for Massillon City Schools.

Today is Election Day at least for some Stark County voters.
While there are no countywide issues or races on the May 4 primary, there are many local tax issues and a few contested municipal primaries.
The issues include proposed levies in Brewster, Massillon, Navarre and Perry Township. There also are contested primaries for Massillon City Council.
Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
