Victoria man launches appeal after being charged sales tax for car he purchased in Alberta years ago

VICTORIA The owner of a Vic West hot rod shop is taking on ICBC and the province for what he claims is a cash grab. In 2013, Lee Grant, the owner of LG Speed and Kustom, was a resident of Alberta. That year, he bought a 1964 Thunderbird in a private sale from a man in that same province. “It was my personal vehicle,” said Grant. In 2017 he came to Victoria for a job and in 2018 he decided to move here permanently. “That’s when I transferred my drivers licence over and began the process of transferring the registration for my Thunderbird,” said Grant. “Being that it’s a 60-year-old car, there was a fair bit of stuff that I had to fix on it.”

Provincial budget slaps tax on vaping products

Regina / 980 CJME Apr 6, 2021 6:05 PM In just a few months, all vaping liquids, devices and products will be subject to a 20 per cent retail tax. That’s on top of the 11 per cent combined Provincial Sales Tax (PST) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) already applied to the items. The new hike was introduced in Tuesday’s provincial budget, and is aimed at discouraging youth and young adults from picking up the habit of vaping. Mike Smider, who owns Queen City Vaping in Regina, says the new tax was something he expected but not something he necessarily agrees with. He said it’s not fair given that other combustible tobacco like cigars and cigarettes weren’t included. And it could potentially affect his business.
