Interior designer Sue Carr celebrates a vision that has never wavered as she marks 50 years in the industry

Share Sue Carr is the grand dame of Australian interior design. As she celebrates 50 years in the trade – a golden jubilee – it feels timely to reflect on some of her achievements. The Jackalope hotel on the Mornington Peninsula, for instance, for which Carr created moody rooms of an almost Cartesian rigour, with strict right angles rendered sensual in charred timber, offset by glimmers of brushed brass. Or the United Places hotel in South Yarra, Melbourne, where she attained maximum impact through radically reduced gestures. Essentially, it’s a sandblasted, gridded concrete façade behind which sit 12 suites featuring broad oak parquet floors and hand-trowelled walls offset by undulating folds of sumptuous velvet room dividers.

Letter: Make I-49 Inner-City Connector decision on data

A recent letter to The Times caused me to wonder if its author, John Glassell, actually lives in Belcher because many of the points presented were either incorrect, deceptive or irrelevant to Shreveport’s transportation infrastructure. First, I-49 does not connect to Kansas City. The cost to complete the segments around Fort Smith, Arkansas, are estimated at over $500 million. There is no discussion underway about funding construction through the Ouachita Mountains north of Texarkana. Our grandchildren will be unlikely to enjoy the opportunity to drive uninterrupted for some good KC barbecue. To address Glassell’s specific claims of frightful inconveniences when accessing Shreveport from north Caddo Parish, I drove the two possible routes between I-49 at I-20 and I-49 at I-220.
