The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners has rejected a motion that condemned the use of chemical irritants and less lethal projectiles by law enforcement against protesters.
Commissioners Irene Fernando and Marion Greene introduced the resolution during a committee meeting Tuesday. The resolution cited recent events in the Twin Cities this year involving the use of chemical irritants and less lethal projectiles by law enforcement during protests.
It also cited research from the University of Minnesota documenting injuries caused by less lethal projectiles like rubber bullets, and notes that the county can be held financial liable for anyone injured by such methods.

The US Justice Department (DOJ) has launched a federal investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department s practices in the wake of former police officer Derek Chauvin being found guilty for killing George Floyd.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the investigation during a briefing on Wednesday, a day after Chauvin, a white police officer, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in the May 2020 death of Floyd, an unarmed black man, after putting his knee on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

Now that fired police officer Derek Chauvin has been convicted on all three counts against him, he can still file an appeal. But the odds are not good, considering some 90% of appeals are denied across the United States.
An appeal in the case is a virtual certainty. But what issues Chauvin s lawyers raise to the appellate court are an open question, according to criminal defense experts.
The most likely avenue of appeal is the massive publicity given to the case and the judge’s denial of repeated requests by lead defense attorney Eric Nelson to move the case out of Minneapolis or sequester the jury throughout the trial to shield them from any and all news or mention of the case.
