Hennepin County board votes against motion condemning use of tear gas, rubber bullets on protesters

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners has rejected a motion that condemned the use of chemical irritants and less lethal projectiles by law enforcement against protesters.
Commissioners Irene Fernando and Marion Greene introduced the resolution during a committee meeting Tuesday. The resolution cited recent events in the Twin Cities this year involving the use of chemical irritants and less lethal projectiles by law enforcement during protests.
It also cited research from the University of Minnesota documenting injuries caused by less lethal projectiles like rubber bullets, and notes that the county can be held financial liable for anyone injured by such methods.

Brooklyn Park Mayor Jeffrey Lunde is resigning from his post of 10 years in the north metro suburb to instead serve on the Hennepin County Board, prompting a special election in 2021.
Lunde, whose resignation is effective Jan. 3, has two years left in his term, which means the council will have to appoint a pro tem mayor in January to assume duties until the special election.
The council officially declared a vacancy at its Monday night meeting and by law is required to order a special election within 45 days. Candidate filing will be open Feb. 2-16. A primary election will be held in April if more than two candidates file for the vacant seat, followed by a general election in August.

A Brooklyn Park police officer was shot while responding to a call Friday night and treated for a non-life-threatening wound, Brooklyn Park police said early Saturday morning, and the suspected gunman is in custody.
Police were called to the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday on a report of a domestic disturbance involving a man who had an order for protection against him, Brooklyn Park police said. Officers initiated contact with the man, who was parked at the caller s home. The man and officers exchanged gunfire, and one officer was struck. The man fled.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (FOX 9) - An officer and a suspect were both injured Friday night after shooting following a domestic disturbance call in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Police were called just after 10 p.m. on Friday to the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue North for the reported domestic disturbance involving a woman who had an order of protection against the suspect.
