Roots: The Gleeson Clan | Irish America

The surnames Gleeson and Gleason developed from the Irish name O Glasain, which originated in East County Cork. The Gaelic prefix “O” means male descendant of, and Glasain derives from “glas,” literally meaning “green” in the sense of inexperience as opposed to the color. There are many variations of the name, including Gleason, Glisane, Glison, Glyssane, O’Gleasane and O’Glassane. The Gleesons belonged to the ancient territory of Mac Ui Bhriain Aradh’s country, the area between Nenagh and Lough Derg in North County Tipperary. The name is still prominent in the area, but  it has been carried all over the world.

Faith Gong: Crying at the movies

Tue, 02/09/2021 - 9:18am meganj By:  Faith Gong We were snuggled up on the couch (or crammed in, depending on your perspective) for our family’s weekly Friday movie night. In the flickering light from the screen, I could see three pairs of worried eyes staring at me. “Uh, Mommy,” whispered one of my daughters, “Are you okay?” “I’m okay,” I sobbed. “This scene just gets me every time.” We were watching the 2015 Pixar animated feature, Inside Out. The last time I’d seen this film was in a theater five years earlier, and I’d broken down in sobs during the exact same scene.

Readers recommend the best books for reading aloud

Readers recommend the best books for reading aloud April 28, 2017 10:26am Text size Copy shortlink: The secret is out you love reading aloud, and you love being read to. I knew it! And I am delighted. Last month I wrote about books that I thought would be great to read out loud. But you came up with a much better list. Let’s get to it: It took me less than a millisecond to frame a response: “Babbitt,” by Sinclair Lewis. Not only is this the pre-eminent novel meant to be read out loud, it is also the one most delightful to hear. It’s boisterous, not reflective at all, despite the deep meaning, and needs voice, especially the bumptious voice of a Booster.
