KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Emerald Youth Foundation works to give young people in Knoxville the tools they need to become leaders as they grow up. They serve the community by engaging kids, and they will receive thousands of dollars to continue their mission.
Officials said they will receive a routine grant amounting to around $250,000 and they plan to use it to grow the organization. They said they hope to use the money to hire more part-time workers, filling 27 open positions through its AmeriCorps program.

More Knoxville children and teens will get to play sports without worrying about whether their family has money to chip in or whether the field is in good condition.
That s what leaders in the GEM Community Development Group hope to achieve with a new investment of more than $1.6 million.
The group will donate $1.1 million to add turf, hitting cages, pitching cages and improved lighting and fencing at Claude Walker Park. The park is used by Austin-East Magnet High School teams, the Knox Area Youth Alliance teams and the Baby Roadrunners football program. The group also will invest in local youth sports commissions to help pay for uniforms and equipment.
