More Knoxville children and teens will get to play sports without worrying about whether their family has money to chip in or whether the field is in good condition.
That s what leaders in the GEM Community Development Group hope to achieve with a new investment of more than $1.6 million.
The group will donate $1.1 million to add turf, hitting cages, pitching cages and improved lighting and fencing at Claude Walker Park. The park is used by Austin-East Magnet High School teams, the Knox Area Youth Alliance teams and the Baby Roadrunners football program. The group also will invest in local youth sports commissions to help pay for uniforms and equipment.
