The Monroe County Historical Society will retain ownership, programming and maintenance of the historic Eby Log Cabin at the Monroe County Fairgrounds under an agreement reached with the County of Monroe.
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners recently approved 9-0 a memo of understanding to transfer ownership to the society of the 164-year-old cabin that recently got a much-needed facelift by the society and Amish contractors from Indiana.
The accord is the culmination of nearly two years of efforts to determine the ownership status of the two-story building that was moved to the fairgrounds in 1960.
Under the agreement, the county recognizes the society’s claim to ownership and through the Monroe County Museum System will provide artifacts for the building and staffing for events held throughout the year at the fairgrounds.

MCCC supports Museum Millage
Museums are not only repositories of historical artifacts but also places of significant knowledge that shed light on our history as it shapes the present and the future. That is precisely what the Monroe County Museum System does here in Monroe. As many of us are aware, the county of Monroe is replete with significant history and the museum is where that is stored. History, of course, continues to be made every day, and there are always new initiatives, especially in a day of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Monroe County Museum System is a treasure trove of artifacts, manuscripts and information that can certainly benefit all of us as we continue to forge the future together. Their goals of expanded educational initiatives tie in well with the initiatives of our own Monroe County Community College as we collaborate to educate, edify, and enlighten an entire community that very much needs this.
Support the museum millage
This letter is to urge the people of Monroe County to vote yes for the upcoming museum millage proposal on May 4.
The video “Save our Stories” on the www.monroe-stories .org is an excellent display of why this is such an important issue for all of Monroe County. The millage represents over 95% of the operating budget for the Monroe County Museum System (MCMS). This supports not only the museum but also the Monroe County Archives, Territorial Park, St. Antoine’s Historic Site and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial & Museum.
This renewal has been in place for the past 10 years and will be an increase of about $5 a year for a total of $15 annually as an estimate of a home valued at $200,000.
