Modest proposal to protect citizen rights to petition Section 5. The right of petition, and of the people peaceably to assemble for the common good shall never be abridged. – Arizona Constitution  Anyone who’s been involved with an Arizona petition drive for a constitutional amendment, initiative or referendum might very well say that the “right of petition” has already been abridged.   The number and scope of laws governing Arizona petitions enacted by the Legislature has expanded dramatically, designed to make petitioning more difficult for citizens. The most recent examples are the “strict compliance” statutes.   The application of these statutes has limited the ability of citizens to legislate as contemplated and supported by the Arizona Constitution.

The head of the San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPOA) is dismissing a recent call for the FBI to look into alleged harassment of volunteers working for a ballot initiative that would strip the union of its ability to engage in collective bargaining. In a statement provided to the Current, SAPOA President Danny Diaz called allegations that the union intimidated police accountability activists baseless. He added that supporters of Fix SAPD the group backing the ballot measure have been both verbally and physical

Police accountability activists have asked the FBI to probe the continuous and systemic harassment of volunteers who worked on the petition drive that landed Proposition B on San Antonio s May 1 citywide ballot. That ballot measure hotly opposed by the San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPOA)  would strip SAPD officers of their ability to collectively bargain for new labor contracts. Supporters of the proposition say it s needed to rein in the union s protection of bad cops.

Appeals court puts San Antonio's paid sick leave ordinance on pause while legal battle continues

An appeals court has dealt another legal blow to San Antonio s long-delayed ordinance guaranteeing paid sick time for workers. In a victory for business groups, the Texas 4th Court of Appeals on Wednesday blocked the city from implementing the rule while it s contested in court. The three-judge panel agreed with a lower court s judgment that the rule is preempted by Texas existing minimum wage law.
