BELTON â James Stapler believes it is important to understand how the United States got to where it is today.
To do so, the criminal defense attorney said it is best to reference defining documents from the nationâs roots â a suggestion he and his colleagues follow annually with the Declaration of Independence.
âI just think itâs important,â Stapler told the Telegram. âMost people havenât heard (the Declaration of Independence) ⦠but back in the day (public) readings were how people would hear about things.â
On Friday, Stapler and nine other local members of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association recited the Declaration of Independence followed by the Bill of Rights at the Bell County Justice Center, 1201 Huey Road in Belton.
Potential jurors will trek through the Bell County Justice Center Monday morning as the county’s first criminal trial gets underway since the coronavirus crisis started.Jury trials were paused in March
BELTON â The Belton City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday in support of House Bill 523 â legislation that would designate a portion of Loop 121 as âDeputy Sheriff John Rhoden Memorial Highwayâ if passed.
Rhoden lost his life in the line of duty in April 2020 while he was attempting to lay spike strips along northbound Interstate 35, near the FM 93 exit ramp, when a tractor-trailer struck him. He was 31.
The proposed legislation would also instruct the Texas Department of Transportation to design, construct and erect markers at the end of each section of highway showing the designation.
Belton Mayor Wayne Carpenter â who wrote a letter to State Rep. Hugh Shine, R-Temple, expressing the cityâs support for the measure â said it is incredibly important to memorialize âone of our local law enforcement heroes.â
