Conservation Commission rejects proposed amendments to wetland bylaw

Photo by: Chloe Shelford After discussions at multiple meetings, the Conservation Commission ultimately decided not to recommend two proposed amendments to the town’s wetland bylaws that will be up for a vote at Town Meeting on June 12.  The proposed amendments, which were brought forward by Director of Planning Ken Buckland, are Articles 10 and 11 on the Special Spring Town Meeting warrant. The first amendment would remove the “No Activity Zone,” which requires a 50-foot buffer between the waterfront and potential developments, for projects in the Wareham Village One zoning district that have “water-dependent uses” or for projects that require “development or alterations of land previously altered with structure.”

Newcomers fall short in Town Election

May 4, 2021 Voters ultimately favored familiar faces in the May 4 Town Election.  Alan Slavin was reelected to his seat on the Board of Selectmen by 40 percent of voters. Write-in candidate Tricia Wurtz earned 33 percent of the vote, while Finance Committee Member Glenn Lawrence earned 26 percent. Two percent of voters left that question blank. Apryl Rossi and Geoff Swett were elected to seats on the School Committee, receiving 25 and 26 percent of the vote, respectively. Newcomer Brennan McKiernan earned 18 percent of votes, while Ron Besse earned 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent of voters left the question blank. Just under 7 percent of registered voters participated in the election, which included five other uncontested races.

Vote yes on the Article 17 solar bylaw amendment

Wicked Local To the Editor: “A Town lives and dies by its zoning!” This old adage is alive and well in Wareham. There are six zoning articles on the May 8 Annual Spring Town Meeting Warrant and four zoning articles on the Special Town Meeting! Specifically, we write to ask voters for their support of Special Town Meeting Article 17 which is a Solar Bylaw Amendment. This is a Citizens Petition article proposed by a group of concerned, committed citizens who understand that the current bylaws are outdated and as such do not include newer guidance regarding more appropriate siting of solar arrays.

Opinion: Vote yes on article limiting solar fields

May 3, 2021 To the Editor, “A Town lives and dies by its zoning!” This old adage is alive and well in Wareham. There are 6 zoning articles on the May 8 th Annual Spring Town Meeting Warrant and 4 zoning articles on the Special Town Meeting! This amendment is the first step in updating Wareham’s outdated solar bylaw. As proposed, new arrays could be no more than 10 acres and must be on land that has been cleared for at least 5 years. This will put a stop to the clear-cutting of forests in the name of green energy.
