UPDATE: Crews Still Battling Wildfire North of Virginia, Homes No Longer in Danger

May 1, 2021  UPDATE: The Northland FireWire reports that fire officials say the blaze has now burned 86 acres, but is close to being contained. UPDATE: According to the Northland FireWire, A fire official said the blaze burned about 56 acres so far. Several homes in the immediate area were evacuated, however, the wind shifted and those homes are no longer in danger. The fire is still not contained as of about 5:30, but crews are making progress. No injuries have been reported. SANDY TWP., Minn.- A wildland fire north of Virginia has forced homeowners to evacuate the area, though no injuries have been reported.

Wildfire north of Virginia forces evacuations ST. LOUIS CO., MN Fire crews are on the scene of a large wildfire in Sandy Township, just north of Virginia. According to Friends of the Northland FireWire, the fire was reported just around 12:15 P.M. near the Canadian National railroad tracks. Evacuation alerts have been sent out to several homes in the 7700-7900 block of Hill Road in Sandy Township. There is no word if an area for evacuates has been set up yet. The U.S. Forest Service and the Pike-Sandy-Britt Fire Department are battling the fire. According to the Pike-Sandy-Britt Fire Department, a helicopter is also assisting with air strikes.

Ronald David Campbell

Ronald David Campbell, age 79, of Sands Township, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. Born August 21, 1941, in Pontiac, Michigan, a son of Earl James and Clara (Hottman) Campbell, Ron was raised in Evart, Michigan, where he attended a country grade school. He later attended Evart High School where he participated in football and track all four years, graduating in the Class of 1960. In 1957, while in high school, Ron enlisted in the Naval Reserve and, following graduation, joined the US Navy full time, beginning with basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, and later in San Diego, California. Ron proudly served during the Vietnam Era aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Lofberg, kiddingly referred to as a tin can. Upon his honorable discharge in 1964, Ron returned to Michigan and was employed with GM in Flint from 1965 to 1971. In 1965, Ron met the love of his life, Janis Faye Baughan, and the
