A Fayetteville Gold Star family was awarded multiple scholarships from the Folded Flag Foundation 10 years after the death of their service member.
The family of Lt. Col. David Cabrera received more than $25,000 in educational scholarships and grants for his two youngest children, Max age 15 and Roanin age 16.
Carbera was killed in action Oct. 29, 2011, just 29 days into a deployment to Afghanistan for which he volunteered. He was inside an armored bus traveling in a convoy from one forward operating base to another when a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle purposely rammed into the bus in Kabul, killing Cabrera, four other U.S. soldiers and eight civilian contractors. Cabrera, was the first social work officer to be killed in combat, his wife, August Cabrera, said.
Country singer Lee Brice was on hand Tuesday to help celebrate the donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars to families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Through OâCharleyâs four-part virtual Songwriters Cafe series, artists like Brice passionately performed in an effort to raise funds for the Folded Flag Foundation, which provides educational scholarships and grants to Gold Star families, those families who have lost a loved one in military combat.
Together, the restaurant chain and the artists raised $575,000 for the charity in 2020.
