Believe it or not, the Golden Globes will wield even more influence than usual this year. With Oscar voting for nominees set to take place March 5-10, the Feb. 28 Globes ceremony falls just five days before Academy members receive their ballots.
The Globes are going to carry more weight because the normal all-telling industry groups such as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, the American Society of Cinematographers and BAFTA will announce their nominations in the middle of the Oscar voting window. And American Cinema Editors, always a strong indicator for the best picture nominees and winners, will announce its noms after the voting period has closed on March 11.
Next week’s Golden Globes mark the start of the pandemic-delayed awards season in earnest. As is now seemingly expected each year, the Hollywood Foreign Press’ choices across both dramas and music-comedies offer nominations that are both bravura and downright bizarre. Only Three Actors Have Won the Oscar Without Nods From Golden Globes and SAG

All awards seasons lead to the Oscars, but for an actor or actress to stand on the Dolby Theatre stage (or as is most likely the case this year, accept the statuette virtually), the Golden Globes and SAG awards are the two most influential precursors.
The SAG Awards have existed since 1995 and quickly established themselves as a place where an actor or actress would be recognized by their peers, due to its large crossover with AMPAS voters.
