Mankato Salvation Army to Host BACK-TO-SCHOOL Community Fair By Ashley Hanley|2021-07-14T20:09:31-05:00July 14th, 2021| The Salvation Army is already preparing for back-to-school. Soon, hundreds of kids in the Greater Mankato area will be headed back to school. Instead of providing school supplies we will be distributing backpack, sneakers and certificates for school clothes.  The Mankato Salvation Army will be screening K-12 students attending Blue Earth County or North Mankato schools (no preschool/no college) back to school necessities free of charge on Thursday August 5th from 11am – 3pm.   This program requires parents/guardians to show a government issued ID and proof of government assistance, such as an EBT or UCare card as well as provide the names, birthdates, and school the child will be attending to be eligible for one pair of gently used sneakers per child from the Shoe Truck, one new or gently used backpack from Community Bank while supplies last, $20 per hous

(KEYC) — Nationwide, the homeless population has increased each of the last four years. Children account for 18% of the homeless population. Security.org released a study on the State of Homelessness in 2021 Tuesday using data released in March from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Minnesota’s homeless rate of 140 per 100,000 residents is below the national average of 174 per 100,000. Even in Mankato, there has been a rise in homelessness during the pandemic. There are a lot of local organizations that try to help when possible, but there it’s surprising to a lot that work directly with this problem because you wouldn’t know Minnesota has this problem from the outside looking in.

(KEYC) — The Mankato Salvation Army’s day shelter will remain open through summer. Beginning Thursday, the day shelter’s hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 4 p.m., with the exception of holidays, for men, women and children. “We’ve always had a hard time when the shelter closed about knowing where our people who had needed the shelter are going to go,” said Lt. Andy Wheeler. “Some of them had to ship out to other cities that are close by that had a year-round shelter. Others just had to find a spot that they feel comfortable in. So now this great partnership with the city that allows year-round access for these folks. So we can continue to help them and serve them, this is just a really neat opportunity f
